If you know about the Helm Vanuatu you know about the infamous wait list. So I was on that list for approximately two years. Getting tired of waiting, and having some concern that the Helm would be too large for me, I ordered the San Martin homage. Approximately one week after receiving that watch, I got the email from Helm indicating that my number was up. I went ahead and ordered the Helm and now have both. One needs to go and reluctantly this one is it. I say that because it’s a very nice watch. First off, the size is much more preferable for most than the Helm. This one has a 40mm case and 20mm lug width versus the Helm’s 42mm and 22mm. Moreover, this is 12.5mm thick versus 14mm for the Helm. Honestly this one fits me a bit better. The case is also very well finished for a tool watch. It is a San Martin after all, and the reputation is well earned. It also has excellent bezel action, slightly looser than the Helm which is a bit heavy. Finally, the clasp with side pushers is a bit nicer than the Helm which has the older style lever lock. Still, I’m keeping the Helm and offering this one for sale. I waited too long not to keep the original. Offering this one here. A few notes: I wore this watch for a couple of days but it shows virtually no wear. It does have a scratch on the clasp which is hard to see in person but I showed it in the photos clearly by getting the light to hit just right. Took me a few tries but I wanted to be sure to show it. Also, the Miyota 8215 movement does have a slight pause of the second hand at about the 5 second mark. I understand this is normal for this movement as the second hand can decouple from the drive shaft to help guard against shock. It’s not noticeable on normal use but is apparent if you stare at the second hand as it sweeps. You can also induce it to occur by shaking the watch. Actually a neat feature that the Helm’s NH35 does not have.
