54.25 Polish CAP K-56 (Polish built Fiesler Fi 156 Storch), 1/72 scale SMER kit, NIB open with parts still on sprues. The Storch (Stork) was developed as the result of a request in 1935 by the Reich Aviation Ministry and ever since has been popular in several countries and has been widely built and used as a light airplane in many countries. At the time of its design the “Storch” was highly advanced as a Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) airplane with a fixed slat which ran the full length of the leading edge of the long wing and along the full length of the trailing edge was a hinged and slotted flap which also served as the aileron. This combination gave superb low speed handling characteristics. The landing gear had shock absorbers that had a travel of 18 inches (45 cm) which allowed operation from very rough fields, but hung down in flight to give it the impression of a long-legged bird. The Storch flew as a liaison and observation plane throughout the Second World War. It was the airplane which rescued Mussolini from the mountain top where he was being held by landing in 30 meters (100 ft) and taking off again with Mussolini and the Commando Skorzeny in under 80 meters (250 ft). A Storch was one of the last airplanes to land in Berlin as the war came to its close. A total of about 2,900 Storchs were built between 1937 and 1945. Two-thirds of these were built by Fiesler. More were built by Morane-Saulnier in France and production continued as the “Criquet” after the liberation in 1944 until finally terminated in 1965. After the stock of Argus engines was expended, production continued with a variety of other engines including a radial engine. In 1944 production started at the Mraz factory in Czechoslovakia, and production of the K-65 Cap continued until 1949. The Romanians built several score at the ICAR factory between 1943 and 1946.
