Italian conductor Fabio Luisi has witnessed a rapid rise from obscurity to prominence that almost seems like the stuff of fantasy. Luisi originally trained at the piano and, after taking his diploma from the Paganini Conservatory in his native Genoa, he settled in Paris and took private lessons with Aldo Ciccolini. During a stint back in Italy playing accompaniments for singing lessons with Leyla Gencer, Luisi decided to broaden his horizons through learning the art of conducting. Luisi relocated to Graz, where he studied under Milan Horvat and made his conducting debut at the Graz Opera in 1984. Luisi’s expertise in opera conducting and wide understanding of repertoire attracted considerable attention, and by 1987 Luisi was accepting guest-conducting positions throughout Europe. In 1990, Luisi founded the Graz Symphony Orchestra partly as a means to branch into non-operatic orchestral literature, and he remained its music director until 1995. From there Luisi moved to the Tonkünstklerorchester in Vienna, which served as his home base until 2000. In the meantime, he picked up secondary positions at a rate of one a year, slowly building the jet-setting round of appointments in a variety of cities. Luisi formed part of a triumvirate of conductors leading the MDR orchestra in from 1996 and was named sole director in 1999. In 1997, he accepted the role of music director of the Suisse Romande Orchestra, which Luisi held for five years, and this really marked the beginning of Luisi’s career as a recording artist. In 2003, he took over the Dresden Staatskapelle and the Semperoper, and in 2005 he was awarded the job of leading the Vienna Symphony. Luisi first appeared in the United States in 2000 with New York Philharmonic and, that same year, with the Lyric Opera of Chicago; his debut with the Metropolitan Opera came in 2005. If that is not enough, he also appeared in guest conducting ventures in Japan, Sweden, Australia, and France. As of the spring of 2010, Luisi became the Met’s principal guest conductor, to assist with keeping up the number of productions while James Levine dealt with serious health issues, and in 2011 he was named Principal Conductor. – Dave Lewis Love, jealousy, vengeance, and forgiveness are the core emotions in this, the eighth of Verdi’s 28 operas. Alzira is based on a play by Voltaire. What it lacks in fully developed, rounded characters and extended arias, it makes up in swift, sharply focused dramatic power. Some crudities of Verdi’s early style are still present, but so is ample evidence of the composer’s maturity: orchestral subtleties, glowing lyric moments, and, in the spacious buildup of the finale, a mastery that weaves together complex emotional and musical strands. In the title role as the Inca princess pursued by the Spanish governor of Peru, Marina Mescheriakova is first-rate. She hones her big voice down to a whisper and also lets loose for the full-voiced, gorgeously phrased moments. Ramon Vargas is as effective, sounding like a young Domingo at times, his light lyric tenor expanding to fit the more muscular role of the rebel leader Zamoro, the heroine’s true love. As the bad guy whose change of heart animates the theme of Christian forgiveness, Paulo Gavanelli displays a lean, bright baritone. He’s equally effective in the character’s obsessive deliriums and in his tender, dying turnaround. Fabio Luisi conducts stylishly, driving the drama along and drawing true Verdian phrasing from singers and orchestra. Even Verdi’s lesser-known operas are worth hearing, and this worthy performance convinces that Alzira’s neglect has been undeserved. –Dan Davis Verdi’s Alzira is based on a play by Voltaire, Alzire, ou Les Américains. It was the eighth of his 28 operas, and while it is generally regarded as one of his so-so earlier efforts, it is better than its reputation. Some believe the element that has sabotaged its popularity is the libretto by Salvatore Cammarano, owing in large part to its problematic treatment of one of the lead characters, Zamoro, who comes across as a rather feisty but, alas, very dense fellow. Yet the story moves swiftly along and brims with love and envy, misunderstandings and vengeance, just the ingredients that make so many other Verdi operas a success. The plot is a sort of a boy-finally-gets-girl story, with Zamoro winning the hand of the Indian princess Alzira, but only after he has killed Peruvian governor Gusmano, who had planned to marry her against her will. The dying Gusmano forgives Zamoro and all ends well, if not happily. The music generally rises above whatever weaknesses one might cite in the libretto, and while none of Verdi’s numbers here have achieved wide currency, there are several well-crafted ones, and the score features both colorful orchestration and a strong sense for drama. Lasting about 90 minutes, it is compact and wonderfully atmospheric, from the playful, menacing music in the Introduction to the tragic closing number, Gusmano’s “Altre Virtudi, Insano.” In between, one is treated to the pomp and color of the opening Act II chorus, “Mesci, Mesci,” as well as to Zamoro’s beautiful second act aria, “Irne Lungi Ancor.” But there are many other splendid moments sprinkled throughout the opera, including the lively, colorful ensemble number that closes the first act, “Trema, Trema,” as well as the stormy “Su Fragil Barca” and the touching “Il piano,” both sung by Alzira in Acts I and II, respectively. Much of the opera, not least its libretto, calls to mind Il Trovatore, with Zamoro a sort of counterpart to Manrico. Yet despite its problems, Alzira has fewer weaknesses in its libretto than Il Trovatore, even if it might lack the knock-out numbers of that later effort.
