ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Ultra-Rare Antique c.1900-1923 Elegantly Hand-colored Sepia Chine-collé “Artotype” Photo-gelatin Collotype Depicting a 17th Century Interior Bourgeois Scene Featuring Four Older Gentlemen & The Servant Sitting Around a Table at Lunch and Telling Tales of Their Adventures titled, “Spinning Yarns”, after the original painting by the well-known listed painter, illustrator & architectural designer, ‘Max Gaisser’ (German, 1857-1922) whose printed signature, ‘Max Gaisser’, appears lower-right in the image corner. Publisher & Print Info: The Artotype was printed & published by the famous Taber Prang Art Company (American Publishers, 1897-1938) who had been publishing their line of Artotype prints under that name since 1897, as well as the company’s previous name L. Prang & Co. since circa 1883—though their printed text info was burnished off the original plate above & below the image (top left, middle & right and bottom middle & right) for some reason back-in-the-day, which would have had their publishing info, name, copyright date etc. etc.. The artist’s name, ‘Painted by Gaisser’, appears printed lower-left in the outer plate margin area just beneath the image, and the title, “Spinning Yarns” appears lower-middle respectively, and the inventory number for the print, ‘5082’, appears printed lower-left in the outer margin corner of the backing stock. The Print itself in on a very thin cream-colored wove ‘India or Japan’ paper which was drymounted via Chine-collé to a heavy-weight cream-colored wove paper stock. Size & Condition: The Sheet size with wide margins is 28” x 22”, Image size is 17-1/8” x 12-15/16”, Plate size is 20-1/2” x 18”. The Print itself is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with beautiful rich, soft & gorgeous hand-coloring with wonderful shades & deep tones. This piece has been in a drawer in our archives amongst other lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light-of-day in all this time—and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. This will look stunning all framed-up! No tears. Extremely minimal tiny & faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the backing sheet and outer margins of the Chine-collé, which are hardly even noticeable and not even worth mentioning (no foxing noticeable in image area). Extremely minimal (only a handful) of extremely slight & small crescent-creases scattered here & there in the image area which are only slightly noticeable from the back of the backing stock itself and also aren’t worth mentioning as they are not noticeable at all in the image area from the front. Other minimal light & small creases scattered here & there in the outer margin areas, along a few outer margin edges, as well as small creases in the outer margin corners with associated tiny dog-ear bends and some minimal outer margin edge dents & dings here & there—all outer margin issues are completely negligible since they can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Negligible/no real toning of the paper stocks from age noticeable, especially amidst the cream color of the paper stocks themselves. Extremely minimal & slight topical soiling (very lightly grubby) in certain areas of the backing stock from being in a drawer amongst other lithos & prints this whole time—also negligible. This antique Artotype Print has never been framed, which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival wood/cardboard backing materials, matburn or lightfade.
