To learn more about us please click on our profile 800×600 Normal 0 21 false false false DE-AT X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 On view here is a high quality watercolor portrait of an unknown boy of ca. 10-12 years of age, leaning on a mahogany chair, executed in the 1st half of the 19th century. Two hand-written inscriptions are visible on the painting: The first, in the lower left corner, is the artist’s signature written in German: “L.Borosdna”. The second, in Cyrillic, reads: “Belongs to / P. Wimpfen / r(odstvennik [= relative – B.W.]) Borozna”. The author’s signature indicates that we are dealing with a work of Russian female artist, pupil of Vasily Tropinin and later of Karl Bryullov, Lyubov Stepanovna Borozdna-Stromilova (1813-1894), extremely rare on the current antique market. The signature written in German suggests that this portrait was painted by her during one of her trips to Germany (after her divorce in 1843). Much later, at the end of the 19th century, her artist’s estate was inherited by her grand-nephew (grandson of her sister Maria Stepanovna Voyeikova-Stromilova, in whose house the artist spent her last years) Piotr Wimpfen (“P. Wimpfen” in the Cyrillic inscription made by the latter). Piotr Fedorovich Wimpfen (1869-1938, a Moscow artist, was shot in 1938 during the Stalin repressions. A similar inscription by this hand can be seen on the drawings of Lyubov Borozdna in the collection of the Moscow Tretyakov Gallery (see our image). Dahl Museum of the History of Russian Literature, the Abramtsevo Museum, the Samara Art Museum, the Buryat Art Museum, the Kiev State Art Gallery (her most famous work is here – a portrait of her sister Maria, which for many years was considered to by a work of her teacher Bryullov).
