the dish do note! there is some crazing to the glaze: see artificially high-contrasted second image for detail view. also visible in the second image. also very importantly, there is a rogue piece of what i think is porcelain on the front of the plate, above the glaze. i do not know if that was a production error or what it could be. but it is also detailed in the second image for you. this is a blue and white transferware piece (more on that below). according to collectable-china, this series was run during the period of 1950s-60s. while i could not find any information of a china company in england with the name «royal warwick». but i found a source that says the lochs of scotland series was sold at discount through grocery store promotions (see more on that below). it is composed of ironstone (more on that below also). i would consider this a decorative plate only, but it was intended to be dinnerware as it is described on the reverse as having detergent-resistant colors. the plate has a gently scalloped edge. from the outer most scallop to the opposite outer most scallop is 10″. the top of the rim is about 3/4″ away from the surface on which the plate rests. (the squatness works wonderfully for hanging on a wall.) you can refer to the scale of the plate in the second-to-last image. base marks (see last image) lochs of scotland «loch gich» royal warwick history (?) in a banner england genuine hand engraving decorated underglaze detergent and acid resisting colors about the lochs of scotland series (from: instappraisal) this is a modern plate in imitation of flow blue plates made circa 1840-60. similar plates were sold at a discount through grocery store promotions. about blue & white transfer printed (transferware) pottery (from: frenchgardenhouse) Sep 12, 2019 do you love collecting transfer ware pottery as much as we do? with elaborate borders and endearing scenes, each piece of transferware pottery is a miniature work of art. a little historical refresher: the technique of transfer printed decoration on pottery was developed in england in the last half of the 18th century. transferring a print from an engraved and inked copper plate to a sheet of paper, potters then applied the paper to unfired clay or china, which absorbed the ink from the paper. the clay was then fired, and beautifully decorated plates, platters, and all other sorts of pottery was made much quicker and less expensive than the traditional method used until then of hand painting. in staffordshire, england, this process lead to potteries being able to supply good quality, decorated table wares to the ever growing middle class. during this century, only cobalt blue underglaze could survive the high heat and the gazes that contained lead oxide. at first, designs were copies of the chinese designs, because chinoiserie was all the rage in europe. it’s at this time that the still classic and very beloved pattern blue willow was designed. some italian designs also appeared, but it really wasn’t until the 1800s that european scenes and subjects were featured on transfer ware pieces. following the end of the napoleonic wars in 1815, scenic views copied from the topographical prints of england, italy and other «continental» countries were used for many transfer patterns. many designs were especially created for the americian market, as the transfer pieces were very popular there too. transferware, with its subject matter, technique and colors, is timeless; a classic that is admired just as much today as it was in the 18th century. still the darling of decorators, transferware is beautifully decorative as well as useful. display your collection on your walls, or inside a buffet or on shelves. these pieces have survived for over a hundred years and are meant to be used and bring joy. another illustration from one of mr. faudree’s books, with lots of blue and white, and red. the differences between earthenware, stoneware and ironstone (from: hunker) earthenware, stoneware, and ironstone are all different types of pottery. earthenware, stoneware and ironstone are all terms used to describe pottery types that are similar but not exactly the same. whether you collect ironstone dishes or are simply trying to stick with one theme for dishware or pottery, learning the basic differences can help keep you on track. earthenware and stoneware are made from different types of clay, while ironstone is a type of stoneware developed in the early 1800s. earthenware and stoneware differences the type of clay used to make a dish, pitcher or plant pot ultimately determines whether the finished piece is called earthenware, stoneware or even porcelain. just like soil, clay used for pottery has different traits, depending upon its source. unglazed earthenware stays slightly porous even after it is fired or hardened in a kiln. it is ideal for plant pots as it retains some moisture that helps prevent the soil from drying out. Most earthenware is too porous to go into a dishwasher or even the microwave. stoneware, which takes a little more heat to harden in a kiln, is not porous once it’s completely hardened. Made from a finer clay than stoneware or earthenware, porcelain is durable enough to create even thin pieces such as teacups. depending upon the glazes used, finished porcelain pieces may be translucent when held up to a light source. ironstone dishware origins ironstone was first developed in the early 1800s in england as a less expensive alternative to porcelain. experimenting with stoneware clay, early ironstone dinnerware producers crafted a durable and dense opaque material that resembled porcelain and was easier and less expensive to mass produce. many of the pieces created in the early years of ironstone featured chinese or japanese themes, again an attempt to emulate porcelain. several manufacturers sold ironstone products under different names, such as «english porcelain», «stone china», «new stone» or «semiporcelain», according to encyclopedia britannica. some ironstone pieces are plain, off-white or slightly bluish, without any designs in the glaze. designs on such pieces are usually formed into the shape of the item. Some plain ironstone is highly collectible; even martha stewart collects such pieces. much of the early «flow blue» pottery, initially produced in england for export to the united states, was also made of ironstone. flow blue items featured slightly blurry designs in blue against a white ironstone background. not all manufacturers marked their ironstone creations, so it could be hard to tell if a piece is really antique ironstone. some manufacturers included the word «ironstone» in their makers’ marks, which makes such pieces easy to identify. in some cases, collectors’ books and organizations such as the white ironstone china association can be a great help in narrowing down an era and manufacturer for a specific ironstone piece. such resources may offer catalogs or photos of makers’ marks or of specific ironstone pieces, such as soup ladles or pitchers. maker’s and/or other marks base marks (see last image) lochs of scotland «loch gich» royal warwick history (?) in a banner england genuine hand engraving decorated underglaze detergent and acid resisting colors dimensions the plate has a gently scalloped edge. from the outer most scallop to the opposite outer most scallop is 10″. the top of the rim is about 3/4″ away from the surface on which the plate rests.
