To learn more about us please click on our profile The old inscription on verso written by its previous owner says that it is probably a portrait of the brother of Duke Friedrich III of Hesse. We, on the other hand, believe that the sitter – just as the other four (acquired together in a group of five portrait drawings by the same artist) – was also a member of the artist’s family, i.e. one of Backofens. Moreover, his uniform is that of a “premier-lieutenant” (1st lieutenant) of the Foot Artillery Regiment of the Kingdom of Saxony (see our image nr.11). It is an extremely rare work of the well known 19th-century German-American artist Charles Backofen. It was acquired together with four other portrait drawings (all of them of the artist’s family members) made by Backofen in the late 1840s, shortly before his departure to the USA. Charles (Carl) Backofen was born in ca. 1801 in Germany. He is mentioned in 1846 as a portrait drawing artist in Darmstadt, Germany and having worked in New York between 1850 and 1860. Probably the court photographer who was registered in Darmstadt in the 1870s with the same name Carl Backofen was his son. One of our additional images shows an oil portrait of Mrs. Joseph Kelly painted by Backofen in 1850, which is currently housed in collection of Brooklyn Museum, New York. Art inventories catalogue of Smithsonian American Art Museum lists another three of his oil portraits (all presently in New York collections; see our further additional image). Another reference source says that the artist exhibited between 1853 and 1855 at the National Academy of Design. Stylistic criteria of this portrait (as well as the other four drawings from the same group) strongly corresponds with that of works by the famous Berlin court portraitist Franz Krueger (1797-1857). One should not exclude the possibility that Carl Backofen was the latter’s pupil at the Berlin Academy.
