Bannerman’s Island. It is an island in the Hudson river close to the east shore between Cold Spring and Beacon NY. I have been photographing this island for years. There is history behind this island. The native Americans who inhabited the area thought the island to be haunted. The castle was built by an arms dealer very early in the 20th century. His warehouse was originally in Brooklyn. He got his start by buying up surplus arms from the Spanish American war. He was asked to get out of Brooklyn so He bought the island and built a Scottish style castle and home on the island and moved his business there. For whatever reason his business failed and the castle stood empty for years. There were caretakers looking after the Island and from what my mother tells me her Great Uncle was one. I dont remember what year it was but when I was a little boy I was going across the Newburgh Beacon Bridge with my Grandparents and I remember my grandmother saying to my grandfather “Oh Earl look! the castle is burning” . The castle has been deteriorating ever since and it has been one of my favorite photographic subjects since my first kodak instamatic. This picture was taken just before most of the castle collapsed. There is still one main wall standing and things have been done to shore up that wall but it should have been done long ago. hopefully this will help remember what once was .
