eBay Selling off a bunch of photo stuff, I need the room. Important details about this item are included in this text, so please look at it. Look at the pictures as well. Thanks for looking. This is a 8-1/4 inch f 9 Goerz Apochormat Artar lens. Mounted in a Rapax Shutter. F9 to f64. This lens is coated, but it is not marked as a Red Dot lens. This was often the case when Goerz was first coating lenses.The serial number is 773818. Goerz started coating lenses at about serial number 77XXXX. The shutter is slow and inconsistent. It could clearly use a clean, lube and adjust. The key here is that this is an Artar that seems to be factory mounted in a shutter, which is pretty rare. The aperture is a little stiff. The glass is clean. There is a retaining ring. No caps. The lens is an f9 lens. I have not shot with this lens. I did put it on my 8×10 it seems to illuminate across the whole frame, but it is difficult to see the corners. So,you might be able to use this on an 8X10 camera at infinity. It is a small light weight lens for a large format camera. Really a nice choice for landscape work. I will not ship to any address outside the U.S.A. I am also selling several other large format lenses and a Mamiya Super 23 camera. So please check my other auctions. Goerz, a great name in lenses, but a really sort of odd company. There is Berlin Goerz, which eventually ended up as part of Zeiss, so you have two companies making the same lens there. Then you have American (AM) Goerz, which is an off shoot of the company making the lenses. This Goerz was eventually made part of Schneider, so two more companies. Ross made lenses under license. Oh, and Vienna Goerz made the Mini Cord… I assume you already know something about the Artar lens or you wouldn’t be reading this. The Artar design was introduced by Goertz in the early twentieth century as a process, or graphic arts lens. It was not the first Goerz lens for process cameras, maybe the was the Gotar? The Artar, and all process lenses, were specifically designed to perform well at close distance to the subject. The design was optimized for sharpness. Both parameters are critical for the printing work the lenses were intended for. Unlike some other process lenses the Artar has been shown to perform well at other distances, including infinity, which makes it a desirable lens for large format work. The original Artar lenses were not coated and the later ones were coated. Most of the coated lenses have a red dot designation, although you do see some coated Artars that do not have a red dot. Artars are slow lenses, which adds to their sharpness, but may make them difficult to use in some circumstances. Artars are often listed with very large coverage, but their original specifications were for 1:1reproduction so there would be a great deal more distance between the lens andthe film than there would be at infinity. So, you should not expect outrageous coverage. Having said this, I use a 16.5 inch Artar with an 8X20 inch camera and get good results.
