Alfred Gruenfeld, the greatest unknown pianist has several superlatives to himself: Johann Strauss said that Gruenfeld could play his Waltzes better than himself. Gruenfeld was the first celebrity pianist to record on record, as early as the first, 1899 Berliner-Gaisberg recordings in Vienna. And then: For a miraculous reason, these early recordings are of a superlative fidelity and presence. Nothing as life-like has been recorded until the electric process. Strauss dedicated the work to the pianist and composer Alfred Grünfeld.[1] The famous coloratura soprano Bertha Schwarz (stage name Bianca Bianchi) sang this concert aria at a grand matinée charity performance at the Theater an der Wien in aid of the “Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth Foundation for Indigent Austro-Hungarian subjects in Leipzig”. The waltz was not a great success at its premiere, but was more successful when performed on Strauss’ tour of Russia in 1886. A piano arrangement by the composer contributed much to its success beyond Vienna.[2] Grünfeld, the work’s dedicatee and a pianist and composer in his own right, also wrote and recorded his own concert transcription of the work for solo piano. Alfred Gruenfelds own composition: Johann Strauss Fruehlingsstimmenwaltzer 12″ Deutsche Grammophon matrix pressed on Victor 78 rpm record Matrix 153s Original issue 5 line patent label Condition: EXCELLENT minus lightest rubs, plays EXCEPTIONALLY quiet A SUPERB COPY Gruenfeld was the first pianist of significance (excluding Brahms’s rather opaque 1889 cylinder) to make any kind of recordings, which he commenced in 1899.He left recordings of works by Bach, Chopin, Schumann, Grieg, Debussy, Liszt, Brahms and others; but Grnnfeld was known primarily as a provider of light entertainment music in Vienna, and his arrangements of Strauss’s music are his most famous and enduring legacy.His expertise at performance of other more serious music is not widely appreciated: even in his own time he was deprecated as not being a performer of “serious” music. Only those who knew him best wrote of his great skill at performing the music for which he was not generally well known. He was in fact the foremost pianist in Vienna in the later 1800s and into the early 20th century.Here I hope a few recordings may convince that this was a very fine pianist indeed, fully expressing many 19th century techniques (eg. the rubato and non-synchronisation of the hands) and expressive attitudes to the music. Note especially the very particular facility Grnnfeld had at producing elegant, lilting rhythms.This is a recording of one of Grieg’s Lyric Pieces (op.43 no.1) called “Butterfly”. It is one of the earliest piano recordings which exists, and dates from as far back as 1899. Alfred Grnnfeld (born at Prague July 4, 1852 – January 4, 1924 in Vienna) was an Austrian pianist and composer. He studied under Hoger, under Josef Krejcf at the Prague Conservatorium, and under Theodor Kullak at the Neue Akademie der Tonkunst, Berlin. In 1873 he settled at Vienna, where he received the title of “Kammervirtuose”. He made tours through Europe and the United States. During a visit to Germany Gruenfeld was appointed court pianist to Emperor Wilhelm I of Germany. From 1897 he was a professor at the Vienna Conservatorium. His brother was musician Heinrich Gruenfeld. Although not the earliest born pianist to record, Alfred Gruenfeld (1852-1924) was, as producer Ward Marston points out, the first pianist of note to have made records. His first sides were cut as early as 1899, a few years before Pugno, Grieg and Saint-Sadns made their recording studio debuts. Gruenfeld’s career was based in Vienna, where he achieved great success charming audiences with Strauss waltzes and other lightweight fare. Claudio Arrau recalled that Gruenfeld always played to packed houses and that he played “elegantly and cutely”. Josef Hofmann was less generous, describing Grnnfeld as having “a velvety tone, but he only played the salon music well”. Yet, as this reissue bears out, Grnnfeld could hold his own in more substantial repertoire, playing with insight and unfailing taste. Given the leeway expected from nineteenth century performers, Gruenfeld’s interpretations are remarkably modern sounding. One can almost dictation from his Chopin mazurkas and waltzes. His brisk and unsentimental Schubert recalls Schnabel’s similarly conceived versions, but with cleaner articulation of the triplets in the minor section of the Eb Impromptu. Those who think Glenn Gould invented dry, detachT phrasing in Bach will be surprised to hear Grnnfeld do more or less the same thing in the Gavotte from the Sixth English Suite. He weaves the contrapuntal threads of the Wagner-Liszt “Liebestod (shorn of its introduction) with flowing assurance, and manages to make the notorious right hand tremolos at the end ecstatic rather than bombastic. His Strauss transcriptions are stylistically elegant. As a whole, Grnnfeld’s records are excellent specimens of acoustic technology, with amazingly forward and lifelike reproduction.
