Lugduni (Lyons): Jacobum Mareschal. 1527. First Edition! Folio, 13 ½” x 10″ , Original Vellum Binding with ties, with Manuscript Title and Floral ornamentation on spine. Gothic text in double columns with ruled borders, WITH OVER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY WOODCUT ILLUSTRATIONS PLUS ILLUSTRATED INITIALS, HEADERS AND TAILPIECES THROUGHOUT. Including a Full page Woodcut of the Creation at the beginning of Genesis and another Full-Page Woodcut of the Nativity at the beginning of the New Testament plus a Half-Page Woodcut of King Solomon at the beginning of Proverbs. WITH THE EUSEBIAN CANONS PRINTED IN RED AND BLACK WITHIN BOARDERS BETWEEN THE TESTAMENTS. Large Woodcut Title Page in Red and Black with God the Father at top and bottom and the six days of Creation on either side. First page of Genesis has a torn bottom right corner blank margin affecting a few letters and marginal gloss. All pages are generally Clean, Crisp and Fresh with Original Wide Margins. THIS ONE OF A KIND SIGNED SPANISH INQUISITOR’S WOODCUT HOLY BIBLE IS 100% COMPLETE AND 100% ORIGINAL INSIDE AND OUT! This Bible is Censored by Johannes Mancanas, a Spanish Inquisitorial Censor. He has added his manuscript notes on the margins censoring certain Scriptures in the Bible. His signature and his Censoring of the Bible are dated 1555. PROVENANCE: This Bible is Signed, Dated (1555) and Inscribed by (Johannes Mancanas = Juan Mancanas) Inquisitorial Censor and Prior of the Dominican Order in Valencia, Spain, at the Church of Don Juan. His manuscript corrections can be found written on a few of the margins along with 3 quarter pages of his notes and Signature. As a Spanish Inquisitor, he would have censored or condemned any given printing of the Bible or particular Scripture. On the last leaf before the rear blank It is inscribed “…Sacri Senatus Inquisisionis….” And is dated 20 January, 1555 and signed “Joannes di Mancanas”. NOTE: OCLC locates only four copies in the U.S. Many later French Woodcut Bibles copied the woodcut blocks and text within ruled borders of this Original 1527 Mareschal First Edition.
